Alanine Amino Transferase (ALT)

Alanine Amino Transferase (ALT) can be measured by itself, but usually in addition to other liver function tests, to assess how well your liver is working. While most ALT is in the liver, it is also present in smaller amounts in the kidneys, heart and muscles. When the liver is damaged, ALT is released from the damaged liver cells into the blood. 

A raised ALT result can indicate liver damage even before obvious symptoms of liver damage are seen.
