Bicarbonate

CO2 travels through the bloodstream as bicarbonate (HCO3). It is transported to the lungs and exhaled as CO2. Bicarbonate plays a role in the acid-base (pH) balance of the blood and its level is regulated by the kidneys.

Testing the level of bicarbonate in the blood is usually used alongside sodium, potassium and chloride levels, and can help check on kidney health.
