Cortisol

Cortisol is a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands. The level of cortisol in your blood varies throughout the day in a pattern, peaking at 8am and falling in the evening (this can be changed if working night-shift long term), and is also affected by stress. If the systems controlling your cortisol level are not working properly, the resulting abnormal cortisol level can lead to Cushing's syndrome (high cortisol), or Addison's disease (low cortisol). 

Sample type: Blood - Ideally, sample should be collected at 8am.
