Electrolytes (Sodium & Potassium)
Electrolytes (Sodium & Potassium)
Sodium and potassium are electrolytes (minerals with an electric charge when dissolved in water). The cells of your body need electrolytes to transmit electrical impulses such as for nerves impulses and muscle contractions, including heart and muscles involved in digestion. Sodium levels are particularly important for controlling fluid balance, thirst and blood pressure. Your body has systems to tightly control the amount of electrolytes in body fluids and cells, but if something is wrong, abnormal concentrations of these electrolytes can cause a wide variety of health problems affecting multiple organs such as the heart, kidneys, liver and muscles. These wide-ranging effects mean that electrolytes are included as part of most routine laboratory investigations.
