Glucose is the body's main source of energy. Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas that is needed to enable glucose in the blood to be taken up by the body's cells for energy production or storage. Diabetes occurs when the pancreas either does not produce enough insulin or the body is unable to respond to the insulin it produces, with either case resulting in raised blood glucose. The level of glucose in your blood goes up and down depending on when and what you last ate or drank, but the HbA1c test measures your average blood glucose level over the last few months, from a single random blood sample, making it the main screening and diagnostic test for prediabetes (also called impaired glucose tolerance or IGT) and diabetes. HbA1c is also the main blood test used for monitoring type 2 diabetes. HbA1c is also known as glycated haemoglobin and glycosylated haemoglobin.
