The kidneys filter blood, removing wastes and excess fluid to be excreted as urine, and so maintain fluid and chemical balances in the body. There are many different conditions that can impact kidney function such as high blood pressure, diabetes, infection, kidney stones, pregnancy, and autoimmune disorders. Reduced kidney function can result in the build-up of waste products and fluids in the body, and electrolyte imbalance. The signs and symptoms of kidney disease are often nonspecific, meaning they may be caused by other conditions and so don't immediately point to a problem with the kidneys. Symptoms, which may not show up until irreversible damage has already occurred, may include nausea/vomiting, loss of appetite, fatigue and weakness, sleep problems, urinating more or less, decreased mental sharpness, muscle cramps, swelling of feet and ankles, dry and itchy skin, or high blood pressure.
