Liver Function Tests (LFT)
Liver Function Tests (LFT)
The liver plays an essential role in the body, cleaning the blood by filtering out waste and toxins, and producing digestive enzymes that are needed for digestion of food. The liver produces bile which helps break down fats in the intestines so that they can be absorbed. Liver Function Tests (LFTs) are a group of blood tests used to assess how well your liver is working. They may be used to investigate suspected liver damage, and also to help assess the level of damage and to monitor it with periodic testing. Together alcohol, excess bodyweight and viral hepatitis are the cause of nine out of 10 cases of liver disease.
