Magnesium (serum)
Magnesium (serum)
Magnesium is essential for many functions in the body such as energy production, muscle contraction, and maintenance of bone strength. Magnesium is a mineral that is absorbed from the diet, particularly from green vegetables. The kidney helps regulate the level of magnesium in the body by excreting excess in the urine or conserving it if blood magnesium is low.
Conditions that affect intestinal or kidney function can cause abnormal serum magnesium levels. Red cell magnesium is considered to be a better test than serum magnesium for detecting magnesium deficiency and is available as a separate test.
