Parathyroid Hormone (PTH)

Parathyroid hormone (PTH) plays an important role in the regulation of calcium levels in the body. If blood calcium is low, the parathyroid glands release PTH which works to bring blood calcium level back up. If blood calcium level is high, PTH production is reduced until the balance is restored. This feedback system also involves vitamin D and phosphate levels as well as the bones, kidneys and intestines. If blood PTH level is high, this may indicate hyperparathyroidism, and if blood PTH level is low, this may indicate hypoparathyroidism.
