Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG)

Sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) is a protein that binds and transports certain hormones, including testosterone, around the body in the blood. When the hormones are bound to SHBG they are inactive.

The blood testosterone test assesses overall testosterone level, while SHBG is an additional test that checks what amount of the hormone is available in an active form.

Note: Requests for Testosterone and SHBG will have free testosterone reported if male and Free Androgen Index (FAI) if female
