The thyroid hormones, T3 and T4, are produced by the thyroid gland and play a vital role in maintaining metabolism. Together, these tests can detect whether the thyroid is over- or under-active (hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism) and whether an imbalance is due to the thyroid itself or due to a malfunction in another gland, the pituitary gland or hypothalamus, that then isn't able to control the thyroid as it would normally.
