The panel for vegetarians and vegans includes a CBC, B12, folate, iron studies, vitamin D, calcium, magnesium, and liver function tests (LFTs) because these markers target the nutritional vulnerabilities most associated with plant‑based diets. A CBC helps detect anaemia, which can arise when iron, B12, or folate intake is insufficient. Vitamin B12 is essential because it is found almost exclusively in animal‑derived foods, making deficiency common without supplementation. Folate is abundant in plant foods, but testing helps distinguish folate‑responsive anaemia from B12 deficiency, which has different clinical implications. Iron studies (especially ferritin) assess iron stores, which may be lower in individuals relying on non‑haem iron sources that are less efficiently absorbed. Vitamin D and calcium are included because deficiency is more likely when fortified dairy products are avoided, affecting bone health and metabolic function. Magnesium supports neuromuscular and metabolic processes and can be low when intake of nuts, seeds, and legumes is insufficient. LFTs provide insight into hepatic stress or metabolic changes that may accompany dietary shifts or supplementation practices. Together, these tests offer a high‑yield assessment of the most common reversible causes of fatigue, cognitive changes, metabolic imbalance, and low energy in vegetarian and vegan populations.
